The Nopcsa family was a noble family of Romanian origin from Ţara Hațegului, the first true ancestor of this family being Szilvási Iván (Ioan). In the centuries XVIII-XIX, this family became one of the most dominant noble families in Southern Transylvania.

The castle located in the locality of General Berthelot was built in the 15th century, by Lopzsa Nopcsa (III), but probably the family already had a mansion in this place. It is believed that Lopzsa was the one who sold the castle to the Lónya family.

After the death of Ferenc Nopcsa, the last descendant of the family, the estate from Fărcădinul de Jos fell into disrepair and eventually became the property of the Romanian state. In 1919, King Ferdinand and Queen Maria gave the entire estate, with land and building, to General Berthelot, in gratitude for his contribution to the liberation of Romania. At the same time, the Frenchman Berthelot became an honorary citizen of Romania.

In 1923, Berthelot left the country and donated the castle and land of more than 70 acres to the Romanian Academy of Sciences. In 1948, the castle came into the possession of the Ministry of Agriculture, and during communism it functioned as the headquarters of Communist Farms. He had here a property, estate and agricultural land, received from King Ferdinand and Queen Maria, as a sign of gratitude for the contribution of the French army to the liberation of Romania.

The mansion, brought back to life
