The Museum of Gold

It’s impossible not to visit the Museum of Golf once you’ve reached the northernmost point in Hunedoara county. Founded 100 years ago, the museum, which belongs to MINVEST Deva, holds over 2.000 exhibits from all over the world.

The most important ones are probably the native gold which originates from its “home” in the Metaliferi Mountains. The northern part of Hunedoara county has tens of gold mines, some of them dating back to the Romans and Dacians.

Few people know that these gold mines located in the Metaliferi Mountains have put Romania in the top leaderboard with unknown gold resources from the continent. Visited since 1912, the collection holds archeologic pieces in the Brad-Criscior area, which prove that humans have been living there for more than 5.000 years and mining gold for at least 2.000 years.

If you manage to get to the Museum of Gold from Brad as well, you can see the tools used to extract and process the gold in the old times. You can find gold in all forms: filament, dendrite, granules, smooth scattered gold, free but combined as well with other minerals. The tour guides will let you know that this collection constitutes the majority of gold in Romania for all types of mining. Also, here you can see one of the rares chemical combination of gold with tellurium, sylvite and nagyagite.

Most exhibits come from the Brad area. The visitors can see plants, animals and even object. Thus, you can find leaves, flowers as well as golden exhibits resembling dogs, snakes or even the map of Romania.

Moreover, the museum has an extremely rich mineral collection with more than 800 exhibits from all over the world, scientifically organised. Its presentation includes general information, their genesis, physical properties and their chemical composition. The last glass case holds the first minerals to have ever been found in Romania.

The Museum of Gold is open between 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM.
